All disassembled but a very good price. It looked interesting so I got my sister in law to ride over to a town about an hour from where I live to check out this great buy. Well, this set had been stored in a garage for many years but I thought it had potential. There I go again.... potential.... that sometimes gets me into trouble. LOL

Of course I bought the set, somehow squeezed all of that into the back of the truck, and brought it home to store in my basement. After about 6 months, I decided to redo the table. Here's what I started with:

Well I think you can see that this set of table and chairs definitely needed some work. So I stripped, sanded, stained, and used polyurethane on the table top and painted the bottom. The chairs had to be glued back together and then reupholstered. I had a tough time getting the oil based polyurethane to dry. In fact, it never did dry. At this part I began to question my sanity. Why, oh why did I ever buy this??? I let it sit for 4 days hoping it would dry. Nope, never did. I finally sanded down the tabletop again, being careful not to take off the stain; and then used polycrylic on the top. Here's the finished product:

I am happy with the finished product. I took it into Restoration Emporium in Kansas City where I sell my items. I was hoping this would sell as a set, but no such luck. Only 4 out of the 6 chairs sold, to a nice couple. Then the table sold to another couple.

It all got started when I was just so tired of having white carpeting throughout the house. We had lived with that same carpet for 21 years, I figured it was time for a change; even though hubby did not. Lucky me, my cousin married a man that owns a hardwood floor company! So, I was able to have him and his crew come install some beautiful floors in our house.

I decided it would be appropriate to share this remodel here on the blog because it goes along with my theme of reuse and repurpose. I did manage to take just a couple shots of the bathroom before the big changes. Here you go.....

<a
You can see that the hardwood floor has already been installed and I'm just getting ready to strip that lovely wallpaper.

I painted the walls a lovely yellow color, used a very old dresser as a vanity, and used accessories that were purchased at estate and garage sales, or I already had around the house.

Kind of a modernistic painting for a more traditional bathroom, but I like to mix styles .... and I painted this myself several years back. It just seems to fit here, I love the colors! That's the beauty in painting your own stuff, you can make it whatever colors you please!

I really like the way the old dresser fit almost perfectly into the bathroom. There's quite a story behind this dresser, but I'll try to be brief. The dresser was advertised on a local online For Sale site; I went to see it and boy was it in rough shape. It was in pieces and filthy. Well, I bought it anyway because I could see the beauty in it, and it was a good price. I brought it home, cleaned it up and put it back together. I then painted the bottom portion and redid the top, leaving it wood grain. I took it into the store where I was selling vintage items. I put what I thought was a reasonable price on it. And it sat there without selling. I moved to another store, same story. Oh, people stopped and asked questions about the dresser, and admired it but nobody would buy it. Meanwhile, back at my own house, I was starting the bathroom remodel. It hit me.... that dresser was just waiting for ME to give it a home! So I did. I repainted it, keeping the top natural wood, hired a carpenter to adapt it so that the plumbing would fit behind. And VOILA.... I love it! Oh, the vessel sink is from Overstock.com and my husband thinks it's just the weirdest thing, as he can't imagine why anybody would want a #1 - patterned sink, and #2 - a sink that sits on TOP of the vanity. Oh well, he's a man, I don't need to say more. The mirror I already had hanging elsewhere in the house and I just painted the frame and hung it here. The light fixture above the mirror is the same one I had but I took it down, painted it too, and hung it back up turning it upright where before it pointed down.

I sure had fun with the accessories in the bathroom. The little white cabinet with the drawers hanging to the left of the sink was purchased at an estate sale. The lady said it was hand made by her grandfather or great grandfather. It was in the kitchen at the estate sale and it was a very primitive looking spice rack. I painted it as the color of the wood was too orange for my liking. I painted some old sewing drawers white too and hung them behind the toilet for display. Some of the birds I'm using as décor I had been given as gifts, other I either bought on sale or used.

Well, thanks for taking the time to read through (or maybe just look at the pictures) in this lengthy post. Come back and visit me again!

I had to ask the owner if the table was for sale as there were many sale items sitting on it. He told me, "yes." So of course, I asked, "how much." I was surprised when he said, "$1." I took it of course!

When I got the table home, I thought that it would be a nice size for a little picnic if the table had some benches to go with it. So, being resourceful, I decided to build a couple of benches. Had I EVER built benches before???? Nope. But I had been looking at some Ana White building plans, and I did know how to use a saw, a drill, and a hammer. Obviously, I could pull off some simple benches.... or at least I was hoping that I could. After writing down some directions off Ana's web site (our printer isn't compatible with my new computer - yep, another story), I took a trip to the local lumber yard, where I bought the boards for 2 benches and some extra boards just in case I happened to ruin a few.

Here's the result:

I was pretty pleased with the first bench, but I could see that this bench was too large for the small table. So I changed some dimensions and built two more benches. Here they are:

I decided the benches needed to be stained, then painted, then distressed. Well, I couldn't get the white ones as distressed as the table as you'll see in the picture. But I LOVE the look of the worn table so I'm not changing that.

I've decided that building stuff is a lot of fun and that I'd really like to do some more building.... I have another project in mind already. You'll just have to wait and see if I get it done. I'll post pictures if I do.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-24374532396010690102014-06-14T21:09:00.000-07:002014-06-14T21:09:24.787-07:00A Different Use for a Coffee Bean SackLast summer some friends and I traveled to Texas for a huge flea market that is put on monthly. It's called First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX. I did a blog post on it. On that trip, I purchased quite a few burlap bags. I've used almost all of them so I guess I'll need to take another long drive to Canton. LOL Here's what I did with one of the coffee bean sacks.

I started with this chair:

Then I added the linen upholstery fabric to the seat portion and the coffee bean sack to the seat back. The back side of two coffee bean sacks was needed to cover the back of the chair.

Well, it's been a while since I've posted last. I teach school full time and the end of the year is CRAZY! So, I just officially checked out for the summer. I'll need to come back to school and sort lab equipment and get stuff put away but I now have more freedom to do that on my own time frame.

Today I want to share a few pictures of a hutch that I redid. Here's what I started with:

This is a nice piece of maple furniture. Very sturdy, it just has some blemishes. According to what is inside the drawers, this is made of the same kind of wood they use for bowling pins???

I painted the bulk of the dresser French Linen, then applied a stencil procedure to the top.

I decided to go ahead and go get it. When I got to the location I immediately knew I wanted that round table but I also saw a larger rectangular table that was disassembled sitting in the corner. Of course I asked about that table too. She said that she would sell it to me. Horray! Two tables on one tank of gas is even better.

Here's a picture of the table once I put it back together:

I first stripped the top and painted the legs black. I really liked the wood in it's natural state, so to finish it I just used Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil. I just love that stuff! Oh, sorry that you can see all the junk in my garage. We've been remodeling our powder room, that's why there is now a toilet being stored in the garage. Once the powder room is complete I'll have to post a few pictures of that. I'm using an antique chest for the vanity. I'm hopeful it'll turn out lovely. Today is the day to strip the old flowered green wallpaper off the walls..... Oops, I'm getting off topic here. Back to the table...

Here's the table all finished and set up in my booth. The china on the table is (of course) vintage, it's a heavy duty Air Force china set.

Oh, that round table I mentioned earlier in this post? I actually did a blog post about that table this past summer. I painted it gray.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-45825360793084694722014-03-28T19:27:00.000-07:002014-03-28T19:53:32.651-07:00It's A LookerAbout a year ago my sister, brother-in-law and I went antique shopping. WAAAAYYYY in the back of a store there was an old record cabinet in terrible shape. The veneer was peeling and it was all dusty and covered with spider webs. I saw some great lines and the inexpensive price tag and decided it'd had to go home with me. My brother-in-law was kind enough to carry it out to the car for me. Both he and my sister thought that surely I was half crazy for wanting that old record cabinet that was in such poor shape. Well, the cabinet sat in my basement for a little more than a year before I decided to give it a redo.

Here's the before and after, both inside and outside:

She was moving from a house into a condo and she needed to get rid of a few pieces of furniture. I was more than happy to help her out. LOL

Here's one of the pieces that I purchased:

The desk needed some work and it had to be a quick turn around. I was in Kansas City visiting and I wanted to get the desk finished right away and put into my shop before I returned home, which is a 3 hour drive from Kansas City. I'm so lucky to have such great friends to let me paint my furniture at their houses and even help me as I work. Here I am in a friend's rec room painting this desk. Said friend decided to snap a few pictures to show that redoing furniture really does take some work.

One of my friends was even nice enough to help me lug the heavy desk down to the store and get it all set up! Thank you, thank you!!

I did my research to find out just how they were getting the designs transferred onto the furniture, and I've been keeping my eyes open for just the right piece of furniture to try this technique. So, finally, on a local for sale site through Face Book, I found a suitable piece of furniture. It had a pretty plain front and wooden handles that I figure I could paint right over. The dresser (well chest of drawers really), is about 4 feet tall and when I found it, it was painted black and the paint was peeling. My first step was to do a little scraping and sanding. Then I used Annie Sloan's chalk paint in old white to cover over the black.

I found a graphic that I liked at the Graphic Fairy website. I bet if your reading this blog, you are familiar with that site. It's just full of wonderful graphics that the blog owner, Karen, offers for free! I made a transparency of that graphic and then used a projector to project it onto the front of the dresser. From there I just traced over the lines. I used acrylic black paint and two artist brushes. I used a large liner brush and a flat shader brush. Believe me, there were times I had to improvise on the lines. The hardest part was getting the lines to look right over the uneven molding on the sides and the handles. It took several hours of painting to get the design completed.

Here is the image partially completed:

The chest of drawers isn't quite finished yet. I'm letting the paint dry overnight and then I'll put a polycrylic sealer over the paint for protection. I might paint the inside of the drawers too. I'll just have to see how energetic I'm feeling. This will be headed to my booth at Le Fou Flea for the February First Friday Sales, Feb. 7 - 9 in Kansas City.

I really like to reupholster chairs. They are actually getting much easier for me. Horray! It's taken a lot of practice to get to this point. Here is the latest set of chairs I've reupholstered.

I started with some nice sturdy chairs that I picked up at a garage sale.

One of them had very good springs but the other had to be extensively repaired.

After all the repairs and restuffing comes the fun part, applying the fabric.

I found this great French print fabric. Just in case you were wondering; in English this means, "Make Yourself At Home".

These chairs didn't even make it into the store. They sold right away to a friend of a friend and I couldn't be happier! It's nice to think that other people like your work.

It is small enough that it can fit in so many spaces. I recently bought a bench at an auction that I knew I was going to update, never a doubt in my mind. I brought it home and sat it in the garage until I could get around to fixing it up. Of course my husband saw it there and commented that he'd like to use the bench at the foot of our bed. I thought.... oooh, that bench is so ugly. Besides, unknown to my husband, I had another bench stashed away that I dearly loved. It's next on my list for a "redo".

I didn't get a before of this bench but I did take a picture of the ugly cushion that was originally on the bench. It was just plain wood prior to the redo. Here's the original cushion:
I had to strip the orange velvet off the bench, which included removing all those buttons. Then I stuffed the holes left behind from the buttons with some polyfil. After that, I wrapped the foam in muslin, then added a layer of 1 inch foam and then wrapped that in muslin and then batting before recovering with the decorator fabric. I just LOVE this fabric. I had a hard time finding it online after I saw it on a blog and then at an upscale decorator shop, at a price I didn't want to pay. Once I located the fabric at an online source I ordered some; this bench is my second upholstery project with this lovely yellow and gray fabric.

I also painted the frame of the bench with Annie Sloan Old Ochre, and used Miss Mustard Seed's clear wax, followed by her Antiquing wax as a finish after some distressing. I just LOVE the MMS waxes; especially the antiquing wax. Now, I think the bench is quite attractive.

Here's a picture of the finished bench.

I added the bench to my booth at Le Fou Flea in Kansas City and it sold right away. I'd call that a success!

Thanks for stopping by!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-70555495951193461022013-12-20T20:46:00.001-08:002013-12-20T21:43:12.472-08:00Christmas in "The Kottage"There are so many people who blog and share so much about their homes and lives. I certainly enjoy reading all of it. I've been able to view some very beautiful homes this way and get inspired from some lovely Christmas decorations. So, I debated whether to share some photos of my home decorated for Christmas. I guess just for the fun of it.... I'm certainly not a professional decorator. After some self conflict, I decided why not. So I hope you enjoy taking a quick look around my house that's decorated for Christmas.
I went very natural with the outside decorations this year. Most of the greenery was cut off of a farm by myself and my nephews. Not only is it natural but we all had a great time doing the gathering.

Come on in and take a look around. I have trees in the living room, dining room, staircase landing, family room, and kitchen. They are all "skinny" trees though, so they are easy to put up.

This is the smallest tree, and it's decorated with snowman ornaments.

Thanks so much for stopping by to take a look at some of my Christmas decorations. Hope you each have a blessed Christmas.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-18915506027911704592013-12-08T18:26:00.000-08:002013-12-08T18:26:41.611-08:00Chevron ChairBoy, I have been a negligent blogger as of late. I have certainly made a lot of projects but I've been doing the easy thing and just putting them up on Face Book and not blogging about them. So here I am, trying to make restitution. LOL

I REALLY like to reupholster chairs. I say chairs because I haven't gotten good enough to anything bigger. Ok, well, I have reupholstered a bench before. I am looking forward to the day when I can figure out how to tackle a sofa. Maybe someday.... But for now it's chairs, chairs, chairs.... Here's my most recent:

Here's the original chair:

I stripped the chair down to "bones". This allowed me to strengthen the springs and add more padding. The bottom pictures show the chair all ready for sale in my booth in Kansas City. I had to sit the chair on top of a table because we have so much in the booth right now. My partner and I are fully prepared for the Christmas rush of shoppers. I sure hope somebody feels like they need a nice chevron chair in their house.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look!

I took just a plain Jane table from a thrift store and painted it a pale gray, then put some bright yellow letters and numbers on it to try to make it look better. Some lucky kids will be able to sit here to play, study, and eat. MAYBE even eat Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas dinner here! It's headed to my booth at Le Fou Flea in West Bottoms of Kansas City, MO. Thanks for taking a look. Sorry I didn't get any before pictures of this.... but it started with very light wood.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-38473089410961983192013-10-10T17:46:00.000-07:002013-10-10T17:46:19.089-07:00Giving an Old Chair a New LookA friend's mother was getting rid of this chair, so she asked if I would want it. Well of course!!! I need more upholstery practice; and this chair would make a nice specimen. Here's the chair as I received it:

I thought the chair had some potential. So I painted it an off-white; and then I let it sit for a LONG time before getting brave enough to tackle the upholstery part. Once I did start the upholstery work, it went faster than I thought it would. It took me about 3 hours to get the old fabric off the chair, and then another 3 hours to add the new fabric. Here's a few shots of the "after". Sorry the pictures have so many shadows in them. I was taking them after dark with the aid of some lamps.

As you can see, I got rid of the buttons and tufting. I thought this fabric had too much pattern for the tufting to look attractive. I also eliminated the separate loose cushion by just making a solid overstuffed seat. The chair is very comfortable.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-3682173993358861632013-09-27T19:10:00.000-07:002013-09-27T19:10:57.141-07:00Breathing some life back into some chairsI get a lot of pleasure out of renewing old furniture. Why? I really don't know. I love to be creative and make something old and shabby look decent again and make it usable for someone. I find it satisfying.

At an auction this summer I won the bid on a set of 6 old chairs. This was a farm sale and the chairs had very clearly been stored in the barn. They were a filthy mess. Take a look:

These chairs were, in fact, so dirty that I wouldn't even carry them into my basement before wiping them down and stripping off the old fabric. Oh, I didn't mention that two of the six chairs I purchased were so beat up with chunks broken off of them so I just left them sitting in the farmyard. I took the four best chairs home with me.

The chairs didn't get stored for long as I had a nice, solid wooden, round, drop-leaf table that needed a set of chairs. So I painted, distress, and sealed the table and restored the chairs by gluing, cutting new seat boards, painting, and reupholstering the seats. Here's the finished product:

The sign on the left in this picture was made with fence boards. The sign on the right is made from just regular boards from the lumber yard. Oh, I did cut all the boards with my NEW double beveled 12 inch sliding miter saw. Yeah! I'm getting rid of the old miter saw I bought at a garage sale that didn't have any safety features. I was thrilled to find a nice saw for a great price at Harbour Freight! Their 20% off coupon was a great savings bonus. Oh, back to the fence board sign.....

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-25070875382441959462013-08-23T21:03:00.000-07:002013-08-24T06:30:21.041-07:00It Really Was An Accident OfficerRecently, I got the bright idea that I'd like to make a few signs out of some old fence board. So I posted on a local for sale site on facebook that I was looking for some. I got quite a few replies, and one family even offered the old boards for free! You can't beat that! So I went over to the alley where they said to pick up the boards. The problem was that I didn't see any of the houses that had an address posted. I went to where I thought was the correct address and I loaded up a nice big fence panel. Then I drove down the alley and saw some people that I knew. I asked them about the address; they said the house I was looking for was on the OTHER side of the street. Oh NO... I asked if they'd come bail me out when the cops came after me for stealing the fence panel. They assured me that they would. I drove around the block and took that fence panel back and put it back exactly where I got it in the first place. I hope nobody saw me loading that thing up.... how embarrassing.
I drove across the street and down the correct alley, where I found the boards as the people had posted. I took about a dozen and now have them here at home. I haven't started the signs yet though. Whew, that was a close call... luckily nobody called the cops. :) Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-36597452312385980042013-08-06T19:55:00.002-07:002013-08-09T16:33:21.380-07:00A New Booth SpaceThere's a very popular vintage shopping area in Kansas City, it's in an old area of town full of huge, shabby, brick warehouses. Many of the warehouses have been redone and turned into vintage stores. It's become quite a destination when all the stores (around 13 right now) are open on the First Friday Weekends. I've been considering making a move into the area for a while now and finally when a new store advertised they were opening, I got on board. I'm thrilled but scared about being in this area. I guess I'm most worried about being able to keep up with putting items into the store and wonder if my items measure up and will actually sell.

The people who run the store and the other vendors are SO nice; that's a plus! We just had our first "First Friday Sale" and it went well, but I was surprised at how much work was actually involved in preparing for the event! Luckily, I was able to hire a few young men to help with the move and a friend came along to help me arrange my items.

So in this post, I want to share a few projects I've been working on and some pictures of my new space.

Here's one project that I tackled for the store. Take a look at what I started with... a falling apart cabinet. There is one drawer and one door. I bought this at an auction for a quarter. Yep, you read that right; a quarter. Nobody else wanted to take it on. LOL The veneer was in horrible shape, I had little choice except to scrape it off. After that I painted it a green, and used vintage maps to cover the missing veneer. Here's the finished cabinet at home in my booth.

I had a lot of complements on this piece but unfortunately it didn't sell. Maybe at the next sale.

Here's another remake. A neighbor gave me this love seat. I really didn't know if I could do a thing with it. First off, It was absolutely filthy. So, the first order of business was to mix up a disinfectant and clean it up. I knew then that I wanted to paint the wood white and distress it. Then I had a couple of ideas for those cushions. I finally settled upon using two vintage seed sacks that I had been saving for about a year. You can see the result in the pictures. I really worried about how sellable this would be since it was so different. But somebody bought it for their lake house right away. That was quite a relief.

Here's a few pictures I took around the booth. The building I'm in was a bag warehouse. My booth is in one of the historic executive offices.

Knowing that chairs are very simple, I said yes. Well I was in for a surprise. I'd never seen dining room chairs put together like this. My teacher friend told me that they were hand made and had been in her family for years.

Notice that instead of just having a padded board for the bottom these have frames and springs. They were really worn and somebody had stuffed some plastic bags under the springs just to keep the springs from popping through.

Have any of you ever seen chairs assembled like this?

So anyway, to make this work I had to take this apart, there were too many springs that were broken. Then I used webbing on the bottom of each chair. Then a layer of muslin, then foam, then more muslin, then batting, finally the decorative fabric that the customer had selected.

I'm pleased with the way the chairs turned out, and I hope my customer is too. Oh, I normally don't do custom work, I usually just do the work that pleases me and put it in my booth hoping that a customer will like it and take it home. But, being a teacher, and I had this summer pretty free, I decided to take a few custom jobs. I'm finishing up the last one now. Yes, there is one more after these chairs.

Here's the before.

I've been going to auctions for YEARS; long before I started upcycling furniture for resale. But this is one of the ways that I pick up furniture to upcycle for my booth.

So yesterday morning, I set out for a farm auction in a neighboring town. The weather was beautiful for a July day in Kansas. The morning was cloudy, which was actually good because it kept the temperatures cool. The setting for the auction was quite lovely. Like I said, this was on a farm. So there were lots of open land, an older house surrounded with large trees, and many barns. In the afternoon the clouds disappeared and the sun came out so those big trees provided lots of shade and there was a cool breeze that kept the day very pleasant.

There was all kinds of primitive farm stuff for sale.... much of it, I couldn't even tell you what it was used for. No, I didn't buy any items that I couldn't identify.

There has been quite a few Amish families moving to areas close by in recent years. They too like auctions. So there were lots of Amish people there. I really enjoyed seeing all their buggies pulled by horses parked amongst the trucks.

I know the Amish don't want their pictures to be taken, but I was SO tempted. It was such fun to see the boys and men in their straw hats and the women and girls in their stiff bonnets and dresses. At one point the little girls were all playing behind a red barn on the farm, it was truly a Kodak moment but I respected their beliefs and didn't snap a picture.

Most of the items had been pulled out of the barns for sale so I bought some wooden boxes, old doorknobs, tools, and some VERY DIRTY furniture. I've never purchased furniture before that I actually had to clean off and strip the fabric off of prior to storing in my basement. But this I did. Just look at that dirt!!! Yuck!

I bought a shabby little cabinet with the veneer peeling and a sewing cabinet that I really didn't want... but I couldn't resist since both pieces were sold as a unit for fifty cents. Yep, you got that right, 50 CENTS. I'm going to try to upcycle them, and if they don't turn out I'm certainly not out much money. No pictures of those right now. I'll save it for another post as I do have some ideas of what to do with them.

I'm always misplacing my screwdrivers as I'm working on my projects, they had boxes of them at the sale. So I was able to buy one box of screwdrivers. Some look to be very old, and we all know how I love old (vintage). :)

Now that I have about an extra 50 screwdrivers I may be able to find one when I need it!

Overall it was a great day for an auction. I'm looking forward to working on some of my new projects. I'm counting down the days until I can move into the new booth space.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-12408296412968372242013-07-05T09:07:00.000-07:002013-07-05T09:07:21.405-07:00Junk Lovers Trip to Canton TXAll junkers love a good flea market! Lucky me, I have several junk loving friends... and of course I'm a junk lover myself! So, after talking about a girls trip to Canton, Texas for the First Monday sale, we finally made it a reality. Boy did we have fun!!! Unfortunately we chose a day that the temperature was 102 but we made the best of it.

Here's a picture of me sifting through some junk. This lady had great bits and pieces.

The flowers have been so pretty but with the hot winds we've been having the past several days they may not last. The lavender has been especially pretty this year.

I've been working on some projects that I'll share soon.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660751572737468437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6729850945307892940.post-89617433029009997622013-06-06T21:14:00.000-07:002013-06-06T21:14:16.373-07:00The cursed table...Have you ever had a furniture flip that seemed to be cursed? What I mean is that it seems that anything you try with the piece goes wrong? That's the way this table seemed to be.

First, I bought this table and chairs in an online auction. I had to drive about 4 hours to get the darn thing. I only did that because the auction house was in the general vicinity where my sister and mom live. It was a great excuse to go visit my relatives. My sister said that I could redo the table in her garage and then she'd help me get it into my booth space. Ok, sounds like a great plan, right?

The pick up went beautifully. My sis couldn't believe that I could get so much furniture piled onto my truck. (The table and chairs were not the only pieces I purchased.) I seem to know the truck's capacity and I bought only what I figured I could haul in one load.

Here's the table and chairs in their "before" state.

The table is a vintage piece but the chairs are newer. I have no idea why they were packaged together, but I decided the table needed chairs, and these were the only chairs that I had so I painted them to match.

Ok, so why was this a "cursed" flip? Well, when I got the table I thought I'd just paint the entire thing. It ended up that I didn't like that, so after putting a primer and two coats of paint on the table top I decided to strip it all off. Then I stained and used polycrylic on the table top. Well, it has been raining in our area for days. The day I was applying the polycrylic was a rainy day. That means HIGH humidity. The polycrylic wasn't drying. I mean, after 16 hours of dry time, it was still tacky. I mentioned this to my dad and he suggested that I set a fan to blow on the table to help with the drying. Now, why didn't I think of that???? That did the trick. The polycrylic FINALLY hardened, I could sand between coats, and I was able to get 4 coats on the top of the table. Oh, another issue while redoing this table was the bugs sticking in the wet paint and the mouse that was terrorizing me by running all over the garage. It did seem like the table was cursed!

Finally, the table is finished, the chairs too and the entire set is in my booth at La Bottega in Parkville MO. I'm back home after my family visit and all is well. I'm breathing a sign of relief after this furniture redo. AHHHH....

Life has just been very busy and I haven't been creatively motivated lately. I'm a high school teacher, so this time of year is hectic. But soon I'll be out of school for a few weeks and I'm ready to get creative again.

In this post I want to show you a project I made for the Fleeting Flea, a vintage flea market.

I started with this waterfall vanity that I'm guessing was from the 1940s.

It was a tough decision on how to change it up, there were some very deep scratches. So I began with sanding, then used Annie Sloan, pure white and graphite paint. I had just gotten some new transfer medium so I printed off some french type of graphics. I was going for a Frenchy-glam theme.

Here's the finished product.

I really like the hardware on the vanity.

Well, even though I fixed up the vanity for the flea market, it didn't sell at the market. We were having an awful spring, and the entire time we had the flea market it was snowy and cold. And, yep, we were outside in a tent. I think that greatly impacted our sales. In fact, I packed up and went home one day early to try to beat a huge spring snowstorm. So... the vanity went to my booth space. Today it sold!!! Horray! The chair that I made to go with it is still available at the store though.
