Giving an Old Chair a New Look

A friend's mother was getting rid of this chair, so she asked if I would want it. Well of course!!! I need more upholstery practice; and this chair would make a nice specimen. Here's the chair as I received it:

I thought the chair had some potential. So I painted it an off-white; and then I let it sit for a LONG time before getting brave enough to tackle the upholstery part. Once I did start the upholstery work, it went faster than I thought it would. It took me about 3 hours to get the old fabric off the chair, and then another 3 hours to add the new fabric. Here's a few shots of the "after". Sorry the pictures have so many shadows in them. I was taking them after dark with the aid of some lamps.

As you can see, I got rid of the buttons and tufting. I thought this fabric had too much pattern for the tufting to look attractive. I also eliminated the separate loose cushion by just making a solid overstuffed seat. The chair is very comfortable.

  2. Thanks for the compliment Tara. No, it's not my first attempt at upholstery. I just can't seem to graduate past chairs, benches, or footstools. I need to get brave and tackle a sofa one of these days. I'm selling this. I'll have to check out the URL you left. :) To see even more of my DIY projects you might like to take a look at mybusiness Face Book page, just search for Kim's Kottage. I tend to post more pictures there, and more information on this blog. My problem is taking the time for the blog entry, so it's pretty sporatic. Thanks for leaving a reply. I LOVE to hear from people.

  6. WOW! I love the transformation! And I adore the fabric. I seem to be so partial to blue these days. I too am ready to graduate from chairs and benches and have a disgusting but solid piece in my garage waiting to be my guinea pig. Follow me at NicerThanNew.com to see how it turns out. I hope it will be as nice as yours!

  7. I have this exact same chair and want to revamp it. It's a very good quality piece of furniture though that has been in my family for about 45 + years. Nervous I'm going to devalue it.
